Listen, What Can You Hear?

Sharing is caring

Activity overview

15 mins
Ages 7 – 9

Science topics:

Animals, including humans , Plants

Spark a conversation with this sound clip of bees feeding on nectar and pollen. This activity is great for describing observations and applying ideas in unfamiliar contexts.

Run the activity

1. You’re going to listen to a short sound clip then ‘reveal’ a matching image. . The aim isn't to find right answers, it's to explore ideas and find out what they know.

  • Do they know what they are listening to?

2. After you've listened to the sound clip, lead a discussion with your class:

  • Have they heard these sounds before? What was going on when they did?
  • Do you ever hear sounds like these in school? Do you make them yourself?
  • What important jobs are happening?
  • Have you seen this activity going on before?

3. Reveal the matching image – is it what they expected to see? Does it change their ideas?

Background science

You have listened to a swarm of very busy worker bees moving from plant to plant in the hope of collecting nectar and pollen. Honey bees use the nectar and pollen collected from flowers to make honey. Each honey bee colony is made up of one queen bee, many female workers and a few male drones. In the UK, we normally see honey bees from spring until late autumn.

Honey bees are incredibly important for many reasons, including the fact they are flower pollinators. This means that they help carry pollen from the male part of one flower to the female part of another, meaning that new flowering plants will be produced.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic decline in the number of pollinators – insects such as bees – due to different reasons, including loss of habitat, pesticides and climate change. This means that there will be dramatic changes in our gardens and food production.
